A commutation is an act of executive clemency that modifies or reduces a criminal sentence without overturning the underlying conviction or erasing the associated criminal record. Instead, it adjusts the punishment that was originally imposed by the court. It is important to note that a commutation does not automatically clear or seal a criminal record or restore civil rights. Additionally, it does not vacate or reverse the court’s judgment or remove financial obligations, such as restitution, unless specifically included in the terms of the commutation.
